The iTunes library

The iTunes library is a database through which your imported iTunes music is organized.

  • ITunes creates two files, each of which can be found in the iTunes Media folder. This is at Windows and on Mac in your personal user folder for "Music".
  • The "iTunes Library.itl" file contains the songs added to iTunes, their information and your iTunes playlists and is basically only used by iTunes.
  • The second iTunes Library.xml file basically contains almost the same data. Unlike iTunes Library.itl, this file is used to make your playlists and songs available to other programs.

  3. Call up the "Settings" and the "Advanced" tab again and click on "Change" in the top right corner.
  4. Now select the desired new location to which you want to move the media library and click on "Select folder".
  5. Confirm the storage location change with "OK".
  6. Now click under "File" (on Mac: "File") and "Library" on "Manage Library" (iTunes 9 or higher) or "Combine Library" (iTunes 8).
  7. From iTunes 9 onwards you now have to "Combine files" and click on "OK", with iTunes 9 you only need to click on "Combine".

It may take a few minutes to move your library, depending on the number of music files you have, and then you can use iTunes as normal.
