VIDEO: Calculate the radiator size yourself

If the renewal of your heating system is imminent, you can calculate the required radiator size yourself. However, you must take into account the location of the individual rooms and the insulation of the building in the calculation.

This is how the calculation of the radiator size is carried out

  1. First of all, you need to calculate the area of each room. To do this, measure the length and width in meters. You then multiply these two measures together. The result is the size in square meters.
  2. The next step is to determine the location of the room. The more outer walls the room has, the higher the need for thermal energy.
  3. When calculating the size of the radiator, however, you must also take into account the insulation of the house. In well-insulated buildings you need smaller radiators than in uninsulated old buildings.

The calculation of the radiator size using an example

  1. A room that is 6.5 m long and 4 m wide has an area of 26 square meters. If this room is in an uninsulated building, 120 watts of heating power are required per square meter. So you have to calculate 26 x 120. The result is 3120. This means that the radiator needs an output of at least 3.1 kW.
  2. Calculate the heat requirement for a single-family house

The heat demand of a single family home depends on several factors. This includes …

  3. The calculation of the required radiator size looks a little different in a well-insulated house. In that case you only need to calculate 80 watts per square meter. For the above example, you would then need a radiator with an output of around 2 kW.
  4. However, if the room in the insulated building has two or three external walls, you would need a 2.6 kW radiator. In such a case you would have to use 100 watts per square meter.
  5. But not only the heating output is decisive when calculating the size of the radiator. You also have to take into account the spatial conditions, such as very low window sills. Radiators are offered in different designs, so that you usually always get a radiator with the right dimensions.
