What you need:

  • Bottom (wood) with pre-drilled holes
  • Rattan cane, approx. 3 to 4 mm in diameter
  • sharp scissors (secateurs)
  • large vessel

You always find things you have made yourself to be something special, and items made of rattan cane also delight you again and again. Now you would like to make your own baskets or bowls from this material. Don't be afraid of it - you can do it too!

Make a rim from rattan cane

  1. Get a base for your basket in the shape that suits you best. There are round, oval, but also angular. You can purchase these floors with pre-drilled holes, but it is also possible to drill holes yourself into a selected wooden panel. To do this, mark 25 - 30 points at regular intervals, which you then drill through.
  2. You can also buy rattan cane with a diameter of 3 to 4 mm. This material is mostly available as kilo goods and consists of several individual, approx. 2 meter long pieces. You can make several baskets with one kilo of rattan cane. The amount used depends on how large you are making your baskets.
  3. Now cut as many approx. 30 cm long pieces of rattan cane to show how there are holes in the ground. Place the pieces in a large water container to make them nice and soft. It cannot be processed when dry.
  4. Now pull the soft rods (called stakes) through the drill holes, leaving approx. 6 cm should remain.

You can never have enough beautiful baskets of all sizes. So it's good that you can ...

  6. Now it is time to weave the edge under the base plate. To do this, place one stake in front of the next and then again behind the next stake. Do this with every stake that is present. Put the last pole under the first bent pole. And the lower edge is ready.
  7. The next step is to properly soak long pieces of rattan. This is very important to make your work easier and to prevent breakage.
  8. Now take a piece of rattan and put it first in front of a pole and then outwards. Do this again and again until the rattan cane is intertwined. The last piece should face inwards.
  9. Then take another piece and start braiding where the previous one ends. This is how you work one piece of rattan after the other until you have reached the desired height.
  10. Now, in order to work the upper edge, you have to soak the rest of the stakes again very well; the workmanship is very similar to that on the lower rim of the basket.
  11. You take one pole, place it in front of the next and clamp it behind the next pole. If there is much left, cut it off with scissors.
  12. Do this again with each stake. The last stake is stuck under the first and your first self-braided basket is ready.
