A window sill has an important function in a building because it prevents water from entering the mounting profile of the window or into the horizontal masonry in front of the window. In order for it to be professional, the projection must be taken into account.

Overhang and other dimensions on the window

  • To determine the correct projection and width of the window sill profile, bulge the clear width of the window niche and the thickness of the masonry in front of the window.
  • The width of the profile corresponds to the clear width of the window recess minus 5 mm expansion joint. If you attach side profiles, you have to shorten the width by the width of the profiles. The same applies if you use sliding profiles instead of the side panels.
  • If your window sill is longer than 3 meters, you have to split it in the middle and connect it with a butt connector. Of course, you have to subtract its thickness from the total length.
  • The correct projection depends on the thickness of the masonry. The edge of the window sill should protrude 4 cm above the finished masonry.

Assembly of the window sill

  1. Glue the anti-drumming strip to the underside of the window sill. This should end 5 cm from the drip edge. Remember that there must be 3 cm free on the sides so that you can open the side panels or can attach the connector.

  3. Leave the protective film on the aluminum, only remove a strip at the edge. Attach the rubber seal to the bar that is screwed to the window profile.
  4. For projections of more than 15 cm, mount a holder every 80 cm. This must be attached before the wall gets thermal insulation. Take special adjustable brackets for insulated facades.
  5. Now insert the side parts or the sliding ends on the sides of the window sill.
  6. Screw the bench to the window and, if necessary, also to the holders.
  7. When cleaning, make sure that there is an expansion joint between the side part and the wall; no additional joint is necessary for sliding ends.
  8. Seal all connections with silicone so that no water can penetrate the profiles or the masonry. Make sure that the window sill has a slope of at least 5 ° away from the window.
  9. Remove the protective film as soon as the bench has been assembled.
