Build a children's stove out of wood

You can easily build a children's stove for your little ones to play with. For example from an old bedside table. Whether with glued-on hotplates or a self-painted ceramic hob, a children's stove offers many years of fun.

With matching accessories, such as small pots, pans, pot holders, cooking utensils, strainers and maybe even dolls cutlery and dishes, a children's stove always offers new play ideas for your little ones. Whether you are “cooking” for the family, with friends or for the dolls, your children can let off steam in their own kitchen like the grown-ups.

It's that easy to build a children's stove

  1. First you should sand down the surface of the old bedside table and refurbish it by gluing and filling cracks, holes or chipped edges. If you don't want to remodel an old treasure here, but use a new side cabinet as a base, you can save yourself this step.
  2. The door is unhooked and the hinges and handle are removed. The holes created by the screwing of the handle must be filled and sanded. Once the filler is dry, use the jigsaw to cut a viewing window in the door of the cabinet.
  3. In the next step, the cabinet and the door are first primed, then painted in one color. The filler has to dry out well and that wood must be free from grinding dust. Depending on the nature of the surface and the initial color, you will have to repeat the application of lacquer several times until the color is evenly covered. You should observe the manufacturer's specifications for the drying time between the individual paint applications.
  4. It looks particularly pretty if you paint the "oven door" in a contrasting color, for example in your child's favorite color.
  5. Build insect protection door yourself

An insect protection door at the entrance from the terrace to the living room keeps you in the ...

  6. The interior of the children's stove is painted black. You should also cut two strips of wood to match and paint them black as well. These are later glued into the "oven" and serve as a support for the baking tray. Here you can use a purchased sheet metal for doll stoves or simply use a small, lacquered chipboard.
  7. Depending on the size of the cabinet, glass coasters made of wood or cork are suitable as hotplates, or round wooden discs made of hardboard, which are painted black and glued on after drying will.
  8. Alternatively, you can omit the plates and paint a "ceramic hob" on the upper cover plate of the cabinet as soon as the lacquer has dried.
  9. Now glue the plexiglass pane from the inside in front of the viewing window. Sharp edges and corners should be sanded down beforehand so that your children cannot injure themselves while playing. It will be even safer if you glue over the Plexiglas edges from the inside with black lacquered wooden profiles.
  10. From the outside, the oven window is embellished with wood or aluminum profiles. You should paint wooden profiles beforehand - depending on your taste - silver or colored. To do this, the profiles are mitred and then glued in place.
  11. Now attach a long handle as an oven handle above the viewing window. It is best to screw the handle from the inside of the door so that it is stable. At the bottom, the flap is screwed with a piano hinge and attached to the body so that it can be opened and closed, just like on a real stove. To prevent the door from opening, you can secure it at the top with a magnetic lock.
  12. On the side of the children's stove you can attach another long handle as a tea towel holder.
  13. Now the function handles for the oven and hotplates are missing, or Hob. The easiest way to make these is from sealing caps, for example from deodorant bottles, or large, round beverage bottle caps. Use the saw to remove the caps if necessary. Cut to the right length, drill through in the middle at the top and varnish.
  14. Once the varnish has dried, you can attach small numbers to symbolize the individual levels for the stove and hotplate. The caps are then attached to the children's stove with flat head screws. Only tighten the screws so far that the knobs can still be turned. The screws should not protrude beyond the wood to prevent your children from injuring themselves.
  15. If you mean it well, you can stick a small touchlight (battery-powered) inside as an oven light. Complete!

Now the children's stove is only missing a few baking and cooking accessories to play with and your little ones can “do the cooking”.

Have fun with the great homemade toys!
