JPG and EPS - basic information

  • JPG or JPEG is a graphic format. The abbreviation JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
  • The format is used to compress files so that they can be better used. However, this compression is also associated with losses in terms of image quality. The stronger the compression, the more disturbances can be seen in the end of the picture.
  • Because of this, there are different levels of compression. So far, the compression factor 10 has proven itself - meaningful compression is possible without a great loss of quality.
  • On the other hand, the EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format is somewhat out of date. This is a so-called vector file. It was published back in the late 1980s and was mainly used to add graphics to PostScript files. These made it possible to output pages that had to be output in an extremely complex manner on imagesetters or laser printers.
  • The successor to these PostScript files is now the file format PDF represent. Since these are much smaller than EPS files, they can be sent better by e-mail and therefore take the importance of Encapsulated PostScript more and more.
