Make a clay frog yourself

Decorative items made of clay have a long shelf life and are a lot of fun if handled correctly. If you like frogs and are a little talented, you can make your own frog.

The hardest thing about pottery is not making the figures, but burning them. Because you certainly don't have a kiln at home.

Make yourself a frog

  1. Cut off a slice of clay and close the clay pack tightly so that it does not dry out.
  2. First prepare your slip, the clay glue, by kneading some clay with water so that it is more fluid and can be used well as an adhesive.
  3. Now shape an egg-shaped frog's body from the clay.
  4. Then 2 smaller clay balls that form the eyes. Press the eye balls on the frog's head well and spread the excess clay.
  5. Coffee: making cups out of clay - this is how it works

The dream of every coffee drinker is surely their own and maybe also ...

  6. Each of the back legs is made from a clay sausage, which you shape into a U and then press together at the end.
  7. For each foot, form a drop that you flatten and glue to the U-shaped rear leg.
  8. Each foreleg is formed from a clay sausage, which is flattened in the lower third. The flattened parts result in the flat front feet.
  9. Now you can press your frog's legs down with slurry and smooth them out.
  10. Use a modeling stick to make stripes on the feet, indicating the toes.
  11. Press a larger hole in each of the eye balls with the modeling stick.
  12. Form small balls that you insert into the eye holes.
  13. You indicate the eyelids by drawing a line on the balls that have just been inserted.
  14. You can cut the mouth with a knife or shape it as you like it best.

This is how the clay is treated further

Since your frog is massive, it should dry out well slowly and not too warm.

  • The drying time can be between 1 and 2 weeks. Let it dry a little longer so that it doesn't crack later in the kiln.
  • If you have the option of having your work burned in a kiln, you should definitely do so now. Without burning, the clay is not weatherproof and very vulnerable.
  • After the first firing, you can paint your clay frog with glaze and then let it burn again.

There are no limits when it comes to painting your frog. What speaks against it, not even a pink or blue frog volume to manufacture.
