You have probably already watched a candle being drawn. When drawing candles, candle wicks are always hot wax immersed and then withdrawn and allowed to cool. This is how a hand-drawn candle is gradually created - from many, many layers of wax. The design is entirely up to you. Hand drawn candles make great gifts and are great fun to make. The wicks for the candles are an important ingredient.

Making wicks for candles - this is how it works

  1. To liquefy the candle wax, heat water in a small saucepan and place the pieces of wax in a bowl, which you then place in the saucepan. Old candle stubs or tea lights are very suitable as pieces of wax.
  2. Now heat the wax until it has liquefied. It shouldn't boil, however, just become completely liquid.
  3. Cut your cotton cord to the length you want. If you want to make sure that the wicks catch fire well and burn evenly later, you should twist the cords well within themselves. You can tie a knot at either end. The knot can easily be cut off later. A good alternative to cotton cord are thin, round shoelaces.

Final steps for making the wick

  1. Now dip your cotton cords into the wax so that it is completely covered by it. So that the cords later make good candle wicks, you have to soak yourself completely full of the wax. It is therefore advisable to "soak" them in the melted wax for as long as possible. If you use shoelaces, they may take a little longer to completely soak in wax.
