Building furniture out of lumber

You prepare the lumber

1. If you have the timber from the demolition of the house in your workshop, you should first check all wooden parts for nails or screws. Since you then want to use a saw and a workbench to transform the timber into furniture, no iron part may be left in the wood be.
2. Then cut a large piece of oak timber to the dimensions 150 cm x 60 cm. Then the oak board is planed from both sides on the workbench until your construction timber is 5 cm thick.
3. This top becomes your table top. On one side of the plate, draw a 10 cm x 10 cm square at each corner. Draw a circle with a diameter of 5 cm in the center of this square with a pair of compasses. These drawn circles are now milled out.

4. You mill with a 5 cm milling attachment and a drill, each 2.5 cm deep into the wood of the oak table top. Because you furniture work from particularly hard wood, the number of revolutions and the nature of your tools and attachments should be tailored to this.

5. Next, you'll make four dowels out of the lumber. Turn four wooden dowels with a diameter of 5 cm and a length of 20 cm on your lathe. These dowels will be stuck in your piece of furniture between the legs and the table top.

The furniture is completed

1. In order to complete the table from construction timber, you now have to cut the four legs for your furniture. Cut four 50 cm pieces of lumber and plane the four furniture legs to 10 cm x 10 cm. Then mill a hole in the legs on one side of the head. The hole is 5 cm in diameter and goes 2.5 cm deep into the lumber.
2. Now you can start assembling your piece of furniture. Take your four wooden dowels and sand down the edges. Use for ribbons a hand rasp and only make a small bevel on the respective edges. These bevels are only used for better insertion into the table top and legs.
3. Take your oak table top and apply wood glue to the milled holes. You do the same with the holes in the legs that you made from lumber. Now take your dowels and insert them into the respective holes in the legs. Use a rubber mallet to hit the dowels into the legs until they only protrude 15 cm from the legs.
4. Then insert the legs of your furniture into the holes in the base plate. Again, hammer the legs into the base plate with a rubber mallet. Align the legs so that the edges are parallel to the edges of the table.
5. Then clamp all table legs with screw clamps. When the wood glue has dried, you can remove the screw clamps.
