With a little prior technical knowledge, even laypeople can change the ignition lock on the Golf 3 if it has been damaged.

What you need:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Slotted screwdriver

Repair the Golf 3 successfully 

  1. First you should remove the steering wheel so that you have enough space and a clear view when working on the ignition lock.
  2. In order to avoid problems with the alignment during later installation, a small notch should be made on both the steering column and the rim of the steering wheel. This will make the dismantling much easier for you.
  3. The next step is to remove the panel around the steering column of the Golf 3. You will need a Phillips screwdriver for this.
  4. In the following, remove all plugs, these are well marked for later installation and do not require any further attention.

Remove the ignition lock yourself 

  1. On the flange where the steering wheel rests, small screws hold the parts together. These must now be completely removed with a mini slotted screwdriver.
  2. Now take off the entire part and carefully remove the housing screw as well.
  3. Now comes the part where force is required: The ignition lock of the Golf 3 must now be pulled out of the lock together with the housing.
  4. For this step it is essential to have the key in place.
  5. Now look at the ignition lock from the back and then remove the screw here as well. You can then dismantle the electronic part and replace it with a functioning one.
  6. Now proceed in the same way during installation.
