Manufacture LED name badges for trucks

With a basic knowledge of electronics, you will be able to produce name tags equipped with LEDs for trucks or other vehicles yourself.

Build name tags with LEDs.
Build name tags with LEDs.

What you need:

  • LEDs in the desired color and the required number
  • The required number of series resistors (for blue LEDs e.g. B. 330 ohms 1/2 watt)
  • A breadboard in the desired size
  • Double-sided tape
  • One to two meters of connecting wire to connect the components
  • Soldering iron and solder
  • Side cutter
  • scissors
  • About 1.5 meters of two-core cable
  • A plug for the cigarette lighter

Build name tags with LEDs for the truck

  • Trucks have a battery voltage of 24 volts. Therefore, the series resistors for the LEDs must be designed accordingly for the on-board voltage.
  • The name tags should be as clearly visible as possible, so you should use bright LEDs for the name tags in the truck.
  • The number of LEDs that will be needed will of course depend on the length of your name. The easiest way to find out how much you need is to write your name with dots on a piece of paper, just like you want it to look on the name tag.
  • For the name badges, five LEDs will later be connected in series and these together with one Series resistor, which is also connected in series with these, with the operating voltage tied together.
  • When soldering the LEDs into the breadboard, you should make sure that you arrange the LEDs in such a way that you can easily connect them in series later.
  • Build your own LED sign

An LED sign is an original thing, regardless of whether it is the house number ...

How to build the shield

  1. The assembly of the board is made a little easier if you cover the assembly side with double-sided adhesive tape. This means that the LEDs hold on to the board before they are soldered.
  2. Now put the LEDs in the desired arrangement on the circuit board so that they will later show your name in neon letters.
  3. Use a wire cutter or scissors to cut off the LEDs' legs so that they protrude about three millimeters from the circuit board.
  4. Connect the connections of the LEDs with each other so that five LEDs are connected in series (connect the positive pole of the first to the negative pole of the second LED, etc.). You also solder one pole of the series connection to a series resistor so that it is connected in series with five LEDs.
  5. Then connect the groups of five together with the series resistor so that you get a parallel connection of the individual groups of five. So in the end you practically have a plus and a minus pole left over.
  6. You must connect these two connections with a cable that has a plug for the cigarette lighter at one end. Make sure that the polarity is correct when connecting (the middle connection of the plug is the positive pole).

The circuit is now complete. If you want, you can still build them into a housing. You can either use a finished housing that has the appropriate dimensions, or you can manufacture a housing according to your own ideas.
