Recognize the basic value and percentage

In order to calculate the percentage, you should recognize the two terms "basic value" and "proportion" in a task. Because the percentage can be calculated from these two. Try this intuitive approach:

  • The easiest way to illustrate the two terms is with an example: Of 5700 eligible voters, 3225 people appeared at one election. The percentage of voters in relation to those entitled to vote is to be calculated.
  • In other words: what percentage of the eligible voters actually voted?
  • The basic value of this task is of course the total number of eligible voters, i.e. 5,700.
  • The proportion that actually voted is 3225. This in the mathematics You should calculate the percentage, also called percentage, as a percentage, as in%.

Calculate the percentage

A percentage always relates to 100, regardless of whether it means things, people or, as in the example, voters. With the percentage you can calculate how many out of 100 voters actually voted. You can easily calculate this percentage.

  1. First, divide the percentage by the base value. In the example, the number of voters divided by the number of those entitled to vote.
  2. You then multiply the decimal number received by 100% because you want a percentage.
  3. For the example you get 3225: 5700 = 0.566 (rounded to 3 places behind the decimal point).
  4. The percentage of voters is then 0.566 x 100% = 56.6%.
  5. Even if this voter turnout is not exactly high, you can see that out of 100 eligible voters, around 57 people actually took part in the election.
