What you need:

  • Special cleaner
  • Adhesion promoter
  • Filler
  • Wet sandpaper (600-1000)
  • colour
  • gloves
  • Compressed air
  • Brush, roller or pointed pistol
  • Cloths

Specific problems with GRP

  • GRP parts are usually thin and flexible. Particularly with accessories in the automotive sector, there is the problem that the parts flutter slightly while driving. The paint has to follow the movement of the parts. Be sure to buy a varnish that will remain elastic. This is usually the case if he is identified for the material.
  • Due to the production process, there are often small air pockets in the parts that can burst open in summer, which causes blisters or flaking in the overlying paint. You should get the parts before the To brush store at about 60 ° C for about 24 hours. This allows the air pockets to open before you paint over them.
  • The plastic parts are laminated in molds. Release agents are used to prevent them from sticking to the molds. Release agents have the property of preventing sticking, so residues of them will also repel paint. Because of this, you need to clean the parts very carefully.
  • All plastics tend to attract dust. You can only remove this with compressed air. If you tried a cloth, the plastic would charge up and attract even more dust. Anti-static wipes leave a film on which the paint does not adhere. Make sure that you also remove the dust from the area, also blow off all the corners and edges of the adhesive tape with which you are masking the parts. In general, remove dust from the environment. Also, dust yourself, especially your hair and clothing. After this ribbons you will have a lot of dust on you, which is not good for any color.

Filling the car - this is how it works

You can remove small rust spots or dents with a lot of patience and good instructions ...

  1. Let the GRP parts cool down after heating. Rub this with a special cleaner to prepare for paint away. Let the cleaner evaporate for 24 hours.
  2. Now apply a thin layer of adhesion promoter as a primer. Let these dry according to the instructions. Check that the parts are smooth enough. GRP usually has a very irregular surface structure, which is particularly noticeable with glossy paints.
  3. Sand with 600 grit sandpaper if necessary. If necessary, you now have to apply a filler. Finish off with a 1000 grind paper.
  4. Now thoroughly remove the dust from the environment. Blow the dust off the GRP parts with compressed air. Wipe the parts again with cleaner. Blow over it again.
  5. Now you can apply the paint with a brush, roller or spray gun. If the parts are prepared as described, most of the paint will adhere to the parts. You should still only use paints for plastics so that you can be sure that the paint remains sufficiently elastic after drying.
