Preparations for the construction of a balcony cladding

  1. At the very beginning of your to-do list is the creation of a construction plan. That means you'll have to put a sketch of your balcony cladding on paper. You need to attach the balcony cladding to your railing using square timbers. The pieces of wood should have the format 10 cm x 10 cm. The length of the square timbers determines your balcony, as does the shape. These square timbers will then run from one end to the other of your balcony.
  2. These square timbers are attached to the supports of your balcony railing. So draw markings for the holes at the points where the square timbers are to be attached to a balcony support.
  3. The actual balcony cladding consists of individual small wooden slats that are screwed next to each other to the square timbers. So you have to draw markings for two holes in each lath, these must be the same in every lath.
  4. After you have provided the drawing with dimensions, you can have the slats and square timber cut to size at your trusted hardware store. Which material and which color you use is up to you. Then you buy the appropriate screws and nuts for the screw connection. The length of the screws depends on the nature of your balcony railing.

Attaching the cladding made of wood

  1. With the help of your construction plan, first drill holes in the square timbers and in the balcony supports. Before drilling into the balcony supports, make sure that the holes in the square timbers also correctly match the balcony supports. After drilling, screw the square timbers to the balcony supports. Make sure that you use washers between the wood and the railing supports.

  3. When you have prepared the wooden slats, i.e. painted or decorated them, drill holes in these wooden slats as well. Make sure that the two holes in the wooden slats have the same hole spacing as the distance from center to center of the square timbers that you have already attached.
  4. A little tip, if you have drilled a wooden slat with the correct distance, you can use this first wooden slat as a template. Simply place the lath on the wooden laths still to be drilled and mark the laths one after the other.
  5. When all the holes are in the wood, you only need to drill and screw the individual slats to the square wood and your balcony cladding is ready. Again, make sure to use washers with every screw.
