Squint your eyes while drawing - why this can be helpful

If you've ever been a painter in front of his easel or a draftsman at his work you have probably noticed that they occasionally look up and their eyes pinch. This does not indicate any visual impairment, but promotes the vision that is necessary for drawing.

  • Try it yourself before drawing your bike.
  • Look out the window or look around your room and try to quickly sketch the objects in the correct proportions to each other.
  • Yes, you should practice drawing quickly before you get lost in details.
  • It is not for nothing that children begin with chalk and wax painters or with finger paints. First of all, you can begin roughly to train your eyes, your gaze.
  • Drawing an ear - tips

Drawing an ear is, as with all human body parts, not so ...

  • When you have such a large task ahead of you, your best bet is to get the rough outline on paper first. Anyone can imagine a landscape, but the same applies to still lifes and drawing complex objects.
  • Close your eyes and roughly sketch what shapes and proportions you can see.
  • Work with soft pencils (at least B). These leads run more easily over the paper and the quick sketch is easier for you.
  • And feel free to work in small sketches first and try several on one sheet - it's not about anything yet.
  • After you've sketched the shapes and outlines, you can roughly fill them in.
  • Remember that you do not have to draw every detail, because the human eye perfectly suggests lines.
  • So it is sufficient if you indicate a curve or just roughly stroke a shadow.
  • If you could roughly sketch your sofa, the table with the lamp, the books and the television in 5 minutes, then you have come a step further.

Take a look at your bike - which detail do you think is important?

Don't draw the bike just yet; take a look at it first and go through every detail. What things do you think are really important? What parts do you think the viewer needs of your drawing to recognize it as a bicycle?

  • Now try it with the bike, which you either stand in front of you or see in a photo. This can be a decorative bike or a Lego bike etc. be.
  • Squint your eyes until the wheel is slightly blurred in front of your eyes.
  • Which contours do you perceive? Roughly put these down on paper.
  • Then simply continue to roughly draw a few details from memory.
  • For comparison, take a look at the cycling icons. You can also find symbols for bicycles on traffic signs and in S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains. What has been left out of these icons and why do you still recognize it as a bicycle?
  • One trick of good drawing is to use your memory and imagination as you work out the work. Work creatively. The viewer doesn't even know what your bike template really looked like.
  • If you can do the rough work, then you can dare to do the exact drawing.
  • Choose a perspective from which you want to look at the wheel and pay attention to the perspective distortions.
  • Start doing this as if you were going to assemble the bike. So first draw the frame, then the wheels with the tires and spokes and finally the handlebars.
  • Finally, set the details with the accessories such as luggage rack, extras on the spokes, saddle, brakes, chain, etc.
  • Finally, don't forget to put the shadows. Which direction is the light coming from on your drawing?

If you do this then you can make great advances in drawing in no time. Good luck and good luck!
