A little treasure chest for them scavenger hunt or the pirate children's birthday party, a new jewelry box or a box for the secret hiding place - all of this can be tinkered with child's play out of an old shoebox. The advantage of Handcraft with shoeboxes is that you don't have to spend ages building a sturdy box.

How to make a beautiful chest

  1. Start with the basic construction. A chest usually has a lid that is hinged on one long side. In our case, of course, we don't use hinges, just plain and simple adhesive tape. Use two to three strips to glue the lid of the box to the bottom of the box on one long side.
  2. If you'd rather have a tall, round lid for your chest, you can crumple up a few pages of newspaper and glue them onto the lid. As soon as you have a rough basic shape in front of you, you can glue a piece of cardboard over it.
  3. The basic structure of your box is now ready. Now you can start designing. Paint the box with acrylic paints in the color of your choice. Using a finer brush and a darker color, you can paint on a wood grain if you want.
  4. When the paint has dried, you can stick pearls, old coins from your last holiday in Denmark or an old necklace on the box. The decoration is also particularly great if you spray dry noodles with silver paint from the hardware store and then stick them on the box. It is best to use a hot glue gun to apply the decorations.
  5. Make an aquarium out of a shoebox - this is how it works
