This is how the potted plants thrive

  • Even with strawberries in pots, you should follow the respective recommendations for planting times. As a rule, these plants are used in late summer. But some species can also be sown in spring or in autumn. In many cases, the first harvest will not be available until the coming year.
  • Plant monthly strawberries

  • As a general rule, some strawberry varieties are better suited to narrow planting in pots than others. Monthly, climbing, forest and hanging strawberries are some of the types that you can specifically ask for in the nursery.
  • Window boxes and smaller or larger flower pots are a good place for the container plants.
  • In rainy summers, it pays to put straw around the strawberry rhizomes. This absorbs excess moisture, which prevents the formation of mold.
  • All in all, you can use commercially available potting soil and do not have to use any special mixtures. However, the strawberries sometimes thrive better in pots if they are placed in soil on a humus basis.
  • Strawberries are thirsty plants. If you want to bring in a rich harvest, you should therefore not save on irrigation water. Nevertheless, the plants are not allowed to "swim" for days.
  • Often used in the garden bed compost fertilized, many balcony owners shy away from this. If you prefer not to place any organic waste on your flower pots, you can purchase a special strawberry fertilizer at the gardening or hardware store.
  • When night frosts set in, you should either bring your strawberry plants into the apartment to overwinter or cover them with a special plant fleece to protect them.
