"How much" or "how much"

Which is correct - "how much" or "how much"?

Especially in the German Language it happens again and again that one is unsure whether a word is now written together or not. The same applies to "how much". Luckily, you can easily remember how to spell it correctly, and there are only a few exceptions.

Unlike phrases such as "currently" and "currently," whether you write "how much" or "how much" isn't contextual.

Because only one spelling is correct: "how much".

You can easily remember this by asking yourself whether you would also want to combine the question word with the adjective in other questions. "How" and "much" are simply two separate words. Here as examples:

It's called "How loud is the music?" and not "How loud is the music?".

It's called "How big is the tree?" and not "How big is the tree?".

It's called "How much money do you have?" and not "How much money do you have?".

The exception: "How many"

Danger! While the normal usage of "how much", say in an interrogative sentence, is written apart, there is an exception when dealing with ordinal numbers. So, if you know the spelling "how many"/"how many"/how many" etc. discover, then the summary is correct here, since it refers to ordinal numbers.

You may note that the words must be written together because while the word "like" exists and can stand alone, the term "vielt" does not exist and cannot stand alone.

Here is example sentences that include the exception:

• "Your what drink is that?" (You could not write: "What's your drink number?")
• "How many times have you started now?" (You could not write: "How many times have you started now?")
