In the case of the Clivia, it is above all the Clivia miniata that is often grown as a houseplant. It comes from South Africa and is usually around 40 to 50 centimeters high. Its flowering period begins in February, but before that it absolutely needs a rest period.

Taking care of the Clivie

  • A Clivie needs a lot of light, but should be protected from the blazing midday sun during the summer months, otherwise its leaves could burn. A window sill on an east or west window is therefore best suited. You can also put your Clivie outside for the summer months, but it will not tolerate frost.
  • During the summer you should always keep the soil slightly moist, the Clivie needs a relatively large amount of water during this time.
  • You should remove wilted flower stems, so that the Clivie will form many new flowers.
  • In order for the flower to continue to bloom diligently, it needs a rest period in the winter months. To do this, slowly water less and less at the end of summer and hardly give it any water in winter. Put the pot in a bright room with a temperature of around 10 ° C. When a new flower stalk forms, wait for it to reach a height of 10 to 15 centimeters and then water again.

Repotting and propagating the houseplant

  • Clivien don't like repotting too much, so you shouldn't move your plant to a new pot until the root ball is completely rooted. This usually takes several years, so you should keep your Clivie with something on a regular basis fertilizer so that it gets enough nutrients.
  • When repotting, you remove the old substrate, put the Clivie in a larger pot and fill it up with fresh potting soil. Then press the soil well. The best time to repot is after flowering.
  • When repotting, you can cut off the side shoots of the plant if you want to propagate the clivie. But wait until some leaves have formed on the shoots before removing them and planting them in their own pot.
