Mining ice at Minecraft
The way in which ice is broken down is very different in Minecraft - it depends on the version you are playing Minecraft with. In most versions, you cannot mine ice, but you can still build it with it.
How to get ice cream in Minecraft
You have to Minecraft differ, because you can break down in the sense of removing ice in any version.
- In some versions of the Alfa, you could not destroy ice with the pickaxe, you could break it down. With the resulting ice blocks, you could also build. In most versions, the only way to build with ice is if you use a trick.
- There is a rumor that from the full version 1.3 blocks of ice are formed when the "Silk Touch" magic is used on the pickaxe and ice is mined with the enchanted pickaxe. You should just try it out. It could be that your version cuts it.
- Some mods allow you to create ice cream using the ID number 78. You cannot dismantle it, but you can generate it in single player commands, for example. You can also get ice cream via the "Too many Items" mod. So you don't have to mine ice to be able to build with it in Minecraft.
Use item 78 without dismantling.
If you have the Mods Do not want to use Single Player Command or Too Many Items and your version does not have the ability to break down ice, do it like this:

- Find a frosty area where water has frozen into ice.
- Build "double walls" out of wood or stone. The walls must be built in such a way that the hollow layer between them is exactly where the ice wall is to be created.
- Seal the construction on the sides between the walls. Pour water into the cavity.
- When the water has frozen to ice, you can dismantle the auxiliary structure. You then have a wall of ice.
While this is a bit cumbersome and only possible in cold biomes, this way you can build with ice in Minecraft when mining is not possible.
