Because not every fragrance suits every type and every time of the day. A good starting point is the description of the scent note in the advertisement or by the perfumery seller. A fresh fragrance is different from a beguiling perfume for the sensual moments in life. Likewise, one of them immediately wrinkles their nose at musk, the other likes the smell of roses only when it comes from flowers, or reacts to certain ingredients with skin irritations. In general, make sure that the perfume is rather light and unobtrusive during the day. In the evening it can be a heavy scent.

In great demand - where can you get scent samples?

Perfumes are expensive. With a product sample that you can obtain from various sources, you can avoid annoying bad purchases.

• Fragrance samples come in different forms: Fragrance strips made of paper, which are often distributed in perfumeries, are less useful for testing. This only gives you an initial idea of ​​what the scent smells like, but you cannot see it on yours skin testing. However, this is crucial in order to get an authentic impression, because every skin has its own specific smell with which the perfume reacts.
• Small tubes and bottles from which you can take the perfume drop by drop, or mini-pump sprays for spraying on, are more practical. You often get these fragrance samples as a gift in the perfumery. Just ask for it.
• In women’s magazines, too, you will often receive a free perfume sample. These mini-letters are glued into the advertisements of the cosmetic companies and can be easily removed. The disadvantage, however, is that the content of these product samples is usually so small that it is only sufficient for a single trial test.

• Please note that you will usually only get the free sample as an eau de toilette and not as a highly concentrated perfume. The scent notes are identical, but the eau de toilette smells less intense and does not stick as long as a perfume.

Don't go wild with a sniff - test perfume properly

As soon as you have your perfume sample, the trial test begins. There are a few things you should keep in mind to get the right impression.

1. Make sure that your skin is unscented. Even a shower gel or body lotion can falsify the smell of the fragrance sample.
2. Apply the sample to the inside of your wrist. The skin is warm there, so the scent can develop particularly well. You can also sniff the perfume at this point from time to time.
3. After applying it, wait a minute for the alcohol in the perfume to evaporate. Do not rub your wrists together; the delicate fragrance molecules are destroyed as a result.
4. First of all, you perceive the top note of the perfume. It is usually very intense, but it also evaporates quickly.
5. More important is the heart note of the perfume, which then unfolds. So, after a few minutes, sniff your wrist again, because only now can you smell the actual fragrance character of the perfume.
6. After a short break, you can use this scheme to apply another sample to the other wrist. After that you should take a break for a few hours. Our nose is highly sensitive and therefore quickly overwhelmed. If you test more than two perfumes in a short period of time, you can no longer filter out the individual fragrance nuances.
7. If you are unsure after your trial test whether you really like the scent, try it again the next day. Their perception of smell is not always the same; in women, the hormonal status (for example during menstruation) can also play a role.
