Server services for photos

  • There are quite a few services that allow you to own pictures to save on their servers. Be it purely for backup purposes or to share the pictures with others (social network or photo community). However, some providers change the files during the upload, which can have massive effects on the image quality.
  • In the case of pure photo communities, this behavior can usually be ruled out. Services such as flickr or fotocommunity do not change the uploaded image files. The resolution and compression remain the same, even the color space is adopted. Your pictures do not lose any of their quality.
  • Facebook on the other hand, compresses the images you upload massively before they are saved on their servers in order to keep the file size as small as possible. The resolution is retained, but unsightly compression artifacts are created. Facebook should therefore be avoided as a photo sharing site for ambitious photographers.

Images on backup servers are not changed

  • Uploading the images to servers, which are only used for backup purposes, does not change the files either. Here the image is usually not even highlighted as such, only files are stored on the server.
  • Services such as B. Dropbox, Amazon S3, or Google Drive doesn't care what type of file you put there. The service will never change anything in your files, no matter what type they are.

  • If in doubt, contact the provider of your server to clarify these things in advance. As a rule, you will not find information on handling image files in the service descriptions.
