Difference between DE and COM
When you start out with your own website, you will be asked a lot of questions. What kind of domain name do you want? Which hoster should it be? Which server packages should be booked? A decision also has to be made about the domain extension. But what is the difference between the common DE and COM?
The value of different domain extensions
- You can quickly see what is hidden behind the last letter of a URL. So z. B. the ending RU indicate that this website was created mainly for visitors from Russia.
- However, the abbreviations are not only used for local descriptions, but just as often to define work areas. In the USA, the ending GOV (Government) stands for government projects, in contrast to ORG, which is used for non-commercial sites.
- When making a selection, you should bear in mind that the descriptions will not only be read by people, but also by people search engines. It would therefore not be advisable to choose the ending US for a German project, as this stands for the United States of America. Search engines might assume that your project is primarily aimed at the American web.
Decide between DE and COM
- Once you have understood what the endings mean, you can ask yourself the question of choosing between DE and COM. For this you should know that the first is reserved for Germany, the second is associated with the term "Commercial".
- The latter would be ideal for setting up online shops, as you generate income with this. Company sites that want to operate internationally can also use COM.
- If you start a private website, the commercial ending would be less recommended, but the one for Germany. With DE you could show visitors and websites that this is a project related to the Federal Republic of Germany.
- When investing in a commercial domain, keep in mind that it might not be wrong to take the other endings with you. If you would like to be reached under the URL sampleshop.com, visitors could unintentionally, because the ending was forgotten, enter DE and thus end up on a competitor's project. The small difference in rental fees would be sensibly invested for a higher number of customers.
