VIDEO: Build a pinata
Be patient as you build the unicorn pinata.
How to build the basic framework
- Make some glue for the paper mache. This can either consist of mixed wallpaper paste or flour, which is mixed in equal parts with water.
- Blow up two balloons. One is for the body, the other for the head. The two should be correspondingly tall.
- Tear newspaper into strips about 2 cm wide, pull it through the adhesive and place it criss-cross on the balloons.
- Cover both balloons with two layers each and then let them dry on a bucket or flower pot.
- Fasten two cords around the body with tape so that the pinata can be hung up later.
- Now there are two more layers of paper mache for the body and head.

Would you like to give your child a big surprise for their birthday, for example? …
It gets a little harder after it dries. The best thing to do is to continue building in pairs:
- Take a cardboard tube, preferably from kitchen paper, hold it in the place on the head where the neck will later be, and draw a circle with a pencil.
- Repeat the same thing on the body.
- Now cut out the circles and insert the cardboard tube into them. If it is too long, shorten it accordingly.
- Fix the roll to the body and head with tape.
- You also use such roles for the legs. You attach these in the same way as the neck.
- For the unicorn's ears, cut the tips out of an egg carton.
- For the horn you either use a small decorative sugar bag or you twist a tip out of cardboard or other thin cardboard, which you then attach to the head.
- Now cover the unicorn one more time with two layers of paper mache. This time, however, you are using white paper.
How to complete the pinata
- After the pinata has dried, prick the balloons with a needle and remove them.
- Fill the body with some sweets and seal the holes by sticking white paper over them.
- For the tail, attach a thick cord to the rump.
- Now you can paint the unicorn in bright colors or cover it with masking tape, in which you cut a lot of fringes.
- Now all you have to do is hang up the pinata and enjoy the way the children take turns hitting it.
