In order to be able to properly practice the Padmasana, as the lotus position is called in Sanskrit, you need a hard pillow. With its help, you sit in an elevated position and are therefore stable in the lotus position.
How to take half the lotus position
- Since the lotus position is rather difficult for the inexperienced, it is advisable to practice the half lotus position first.
- Sit on the pillow, preferably just on the edge, and stretch out your legs.
- Pull your right leg towards the upper bodyAs if you were going to sit cross-legged.
- Now bring your left leg to your upper body and place it on your right thigh.
- The right foot lies under the left, which rests on the thigh with the sole of the foot facing up.
- Your hands rest on your knees in this sitting position.
- Do not practice the half lotus position on one side, but change the leg that is on the opposite thigh.

This is how the Padmasana is practiced
- Sit on a hard pillow as described above.
- For the full lotus position, which is modeled on a lotus flower, first place your right foot on the left thigh and then the left foot on the right thigh.
- The soles of the feet always point upwards in the lotus position.
- It is very likely that you will experience pain in your legs and hips at first. However, the more regularly you practice the lotus position, the more agile you will become.
- The further you place your feet on your thighs towards the upper body, the more difficult it is to remain in the lotus position at the beginning.
- Place your feet further forward on your thighs if it is still too difficult for you to hold them close to your upper body.
- If you are in severe pain, release the lotus position and do the half position instead.
