Sew truck tarpaulin and design it creatively
It's a current trend - bags or wallets made from truck tarpaulin. The tear-resistant fabric not only looks great and can withstand a lot, it also follows the trend towards recycling. So you can sew them up yourself.
Truck tarpaulin is a very strong, thick material that you can still process with a standard sewing machine. However, you should be careful not to sew too many layers on top of each other - otherwise the sewing machine can reach its limits.
How to sew a pencil case out of a truck tarpaulin
A lot of different things can be made out of a truck tarpaulin: Bags, Pencil cases, purses - there are almost no limits to your imagination. You can combine the material with oilcloth or sew on fabric applications. The tarpaulin for sew are available in different colors in stores or online. The way to a nearby forwarding agent is more environmentally friendly: Ask if you can get pieces of discarded truck tarpaulin. This is usually cheaper and is just as suitable for your project. You only need to wipe the tarpaulin once before sewing.
- Before doing this, think about what you want to sew from the tarpaulin. You need more tarpaulin for a bag than for a small pencil case or wallet. For sewing, you should use either a denim needle or a leather needle, which allows you to easily work on thicker fabric.
- If you want to sew a small pouch for change and bills, for example, cut a suitably large rectangle out of the LWK tarpaulin. Round off the corners a little on one side - this side forms the flap of the bag.
- Using a hammer and a soft surface, hit the upper part of a push button in the middle of the flap. You attach the lower part to the bag in such a way that you can easily close the flap.
- Fold the bag inside out as you want it to look later. If necessary, carefully pin it in place on the sides - but note that once a hole is in the tarpaulin, it is no longer so easy to remove. Only the outer sides of the bag will no longer be visible in retrospect.
- Sew along the sides of the bag and close it with a straight stitch. Sewing two layers of truck tarpaulin is no problem for most sewing machines. You don't have to topstitch the edges as the tarpaulin won't fray.
- Take the bias tape, unfold it, and sew it along the edge from one side over the flap to the other side. Then fold it over and sew the other edge in place as well. The seam created by the sewing should be completely covered.
