You can in Minecraft 1.8 play in different ways. Flying is only possible if you choose Creative mode.

• Survival mode: You cannot fly in this mode. Mobs will attack you and you can usually kill other players if this function has not been deactivated in the server. Falls cost life or kill instantly.
• Creative mode: if you want to fly, you have to choose this mode. But it's peaceful here. Mobs will only attack when you attack them. These cannot harm you. You're very good at building in this mode, it's about creativity, not battles and adventure.

• Start a new world and select "Creative Mode" from the main menu.
• Your player is now in the new world and can be controlled as usual using the WASD buttons.

• If you want it to run faster, press the B button twice.
• Make it fly by pressing the spacebar twice. You have to do this quickly, like a double click.
• Press the space bar to go up and the "Shift" key to go down.
• If you want to land again, double-press the spacebar again.

When flying, you can soar as high as you want in the air. This has the advantage that you can easily get an overview of the Minecraft world - also something positive in 1.8 and a sensible use of flying.

Switch between modes

1. Start the server, which can usually be found in the Minecraft_Server.exe directory under minecraft_server.jar.
2. Open the Server.properties file with a text editor.
3. Set the gamemode to the creative mode (gamemode = 1).
4. Close the server and restart it.
5. Open the world you want to fly in.

If you are an operator, you can also just type "/ gamemode your name 1" on the command line to switch to creative mode. If you choose a 0, you are back in survival mode, in which you can no longer fly. So in Minecraft 1.8 you can switch between modes and fly if necessary or fight as you wish.
