The mailbox as a delivery option

Many postal companies around the world offer so-called "mailboxes" for their customers.

  • A post office box is a safe deposit box in which the post office in charge stores your mail. So it will not be sent to your private postal address, but to this mailbox. The letters must be marked accordingly for this mailbox. It is also possible to have parcels sent to a post office box.
  • In Germany and Switzerland, a corresponding country address must always be linked to a PO box. Depending on the post office, you will be given up to 4 keys.
  • Setting up a post office box in Germany costs approx. 15 euro. Further use is then free of charge. In Switzerland, post boxes are provided free of charge.
  • The advantage of these mailboxes is that your mail will be delivered in any case and you have access to your mailbox at any time, even after the counter is shot. So you can pick up your mail at any time you like.

Rent a post box in Switzerland

  • As already mentioned above, "PO box rental" is only possible in Switzerland if you provide a country address in the catchment area of the post office. If you live in Germany, but directly on the Swiss border, that is not possible either. As an independent country, Germany is not part of the so-called catchment area.
  • The background is that that State Secretariat for Economic Affairs in Switzerland (seco) wants to protect all PO box owners from misuse of PO boxes.
  • Alternatively, you can have your mail sent to Switzerland with poste restante. This is useful if you are often traveling in Switzerland or if you do not have a fixed delivery address in Switzerland.
  • There are various post offices in Switzerland that offer this mail storage service. The recipient and the note "poste restante" must always be noted on the letters.
  • You are obliged to collect your mail at counter hours within one month. If this is not done, the mail will be returned to the sender at your expense.
  • This Swiss Post service is free of charge. You can set up a mailbox personally in the post office of your choice in Switzerland.
  • Forwarding orders to the poste restante address are chargeable. Chiffread addresses do not belong in the offer.

On the Internet address of the Swiss Post you will find all the helpful information about poste restante delivery.
