Bodden coast - that is what it means

  • Bodden coast or just "Bodden", this term is almost exclusively associated with shallow coastal waters on the Baltic Sea.
  • These are shallow parts of the Baltic Sea, which are separated from the open sea (in this case the Baltic Sea itself) by larger headlands.
  • The general name of such waters is actually "lagoon" - in the area of the Baltic Sea, however, "Bodden" has become natural for this type of landscape.
  • The water in the shallow Bodden areas is usually less salty, as rivers flowing into the Bodden reduce the salinity.
  • The exchange of water with the sea takes place only via narrow accesses. The access to the Darß must and had to be dredged repeatedly (harbor problem).
  • The tundra - interesting facts about its formation

Do you actually know what a tundra is? You will probably find the term at ...

  • Well-known lagoon landscapes are the Greifswalder Bodden and the Darß-Zingst lagoon chain.
  • The national park is also known "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft", which stretches from Darß to Rügen and covers the entire transition area between land and the Baltic Sea.
  • The origin of the word "Bodden" is not certain. It is probably a (Low German) form of the word "Boden" (which is also visible in shallow water).

This is how the lagoon landscape on the Baltic Sea came into being

  • The lagoon coast in Pomerania and Mecklenburg is a ground moraine landscape with deeper glacier tongue basins that is (today) flooded by the Baltic Sea.
  • This shallow landscape comes from the Ice Age and can - depending on the water level in the Baltic Sea - be exposed, but it can also be under water, which is currently the case.
  • It can be assumed that the sea level rose after the last ice age and thus submerged the deeper parts of the moraine landscape. The individual headlands, on the other hand, are morainic ridges.
  • By the way: The lagoon landscape is one of the youngest forms of landscape in Germany.
