Where does the milk come from? What is my bread made of? These and many other questions deal with children between three and six years. It is therefore advisable to focus on the theme of the farm in kindergarten to take up.

The subject of the farm - some preliminary considerations

  • Before you can start working on the farm, you should find out what previous experience your group of children has. If your facility is in the countryside, most children will have seen a farm or at least know the typical farm animals. This is not necessarily a prerequisite for city children.
  • Think about how you would like to work on the topic in kindergarten. If you are planning a more extensive project, you should inform your colleagues and, if necessary, involve them. In this case, the planning phase will be more intensive and take longer than if you only wanted to offer a few individual activities.
  • The farm theme is very extensive. You should therefore only take up a few aspects that you would like to examine more closely with the children. Which these are should depend on the interests and also on the age of the children. The topic of "milk production", for example, is more suitable for slightly older children, the question "What animals are there on the farm?" can answer many three-year-olds.
  • Plan what farm-themed activities you would like to offer. Pay attention to the greatest possible variety of methods and a high level of practical relevance. It makes sense if there is both cognitive and creative support for the children.

Concrete suggestions for implementation in kindergarten

  • Inquire early on whether there is a farm near your facility that you can visit with the children. In this way, the children can experience for themselves what life is like on the farm. Such an excursion is well suited as a project highlight and conclusion.
  • Turn your group room into a farm together with the children. Let the children paint and cut out animals that will then adorn the walls. Make sure that you have enough painting and handicraft materials before you deal with the topic in kindergarten.
  • If you are planning a more extensive project, you should inform your colleagues and, if necessary, involve them.
  • Think about how you can present the work results of the children after the end of the project. For example, photo documentation, a partition in the hallway or an information booklet designed by the children for their parents would be possible.
