VIDEO: Make kaleidoscopes from cardboard tubes yourself

instagram viewer

Kaleidoscopes are a 19th century toy. Century, they consist of a tube with specially arranged mirrors. The viewer sees impressive geometric, often star-shaped patterns of shapes and colors, which are created from colored glass or plastic particles at the other end of the pipe. By gently turning or shaking the pipe, new figures are formed. The fascination arises from the combination of chance and (physically generated) order.

Here's how to make a simple kaleidoscope

  1. Glue the box with glossy aluminum or mirror film. The film must lie flat and free from creases.
  2. The box must now be carefully folded into a triangular tube. To do this, score the cardboard accordingly on the back, each strip is 5 cm wide. When folding, the mirror film comes inwards. This mirror part of the kaleidoscope is covered with wide adhesive tape.
  3. Place the triangular pillar on a piece of cardboard and draw the outline. Cut out the triangle. Cut a peephole in the middle of the cardboard triangle. The diameter should be about 1 cm.
  4. Glue the triangle to the mirror column. Now cut out the same triangle from the transparent film and from the transparent parchment paper.
  5. Make a kaleidoscope - this is how you make children's toys

Almost every adult had the opportunity to watch a kaleidoscope as a child.

  6. Place the cord on the edge of the foil triangle and glue it on with the liquid adhesive. This somewhat fiddly job is important so that the foil triangle and the parchment paper have some distance from each other.
  7. Now put some filler material on the triangle. Close the triangle with the parchment triangle and glue it on. It is important that the filler particles lie loosely between these two triangles. You have to stay agile. Now the slide of the kaleidoscope is ready.
  8. When the glue has hardened, this slide is attached to the other end of the kaleidoscope. The easiest way to do this is with masking tape. You need to make sure that the side with the parchment paper is on the outside.
  9. And the beautiful picture show can begin. Your kaleidoscope will be more beautiful if you insert the mirror triangle into a matching cardboard tube and cover it with colored wrapping paper.
