Basic information on motorcycle lighting

Similar to other motor vehicles, you must not simply attach any kind of lighting to a motorcycle. Basically:

  • Additional lighting must also serve a specific purpose. Simple decorative lighting is not allowed. All headlights must have the E-mark, with older models the "test queue" is also allowed.
  • You are allowed to mount one fog light and one high beam light each, but not a 2nd. Headlights for low beam, provided that your motorcycle is registered under German law. 2 spotlights are also allowed under German and EU law.
  • According to EC law, you are also allowed to use double low beam or have double fog lamps.
  • If your motorcycle is approved under German law, you can only use 2 headlights for low beam if they are designed as double headlights with a common lens. The motorcycle can thus be clearly identified as a single-track vehicle.

With 2 headlights through the HU

As mentioned, it depends on whether your motorcycle is registered under German law or EU law. After that, you need to orientate yourself on the number of headlights. 2 dimming or Fog lights are only allowed with EU approval.

  • All headlights must bear a test mark; there may be exceptions for imported vehicles, e.g. B. an SAE mark. You do not need an ABE for the additional headlights, but the test mark must be present.
  • The fog lights must not be installed higher than the main lights. They can also be mounted on the crash bar. According to EC law, you can add 2, these must be symmetrical to the center of the vehicle. According to German law, you are only allowed to add one, it may be a maximum of 250 mm away from the center of the vehicle.
  • According to both EU law and German law, 2 additional high-beam headlights are allowed, but only 2 may light up at the same time. When stopping down, the auxiliary lamps must also go out. According to EU law, a blue indicator light is required; according to German law, it is sufficient for the switch position to indicate the switching status.
  • 2 With the exception of the double headlights mentioned, low beam lights are only permitted under EC law; these may be a maximum of 200 mm away from the center of the vehicle and must be arranged symmetrically. According to EU law, you are allowed to build this at a height of 500-1200 mm from the road, according to StVZO only up to 1000 mm.
