The S51 from Simson was built in the former GDR and was especially popular among teenagers and young adults. There were different types of moped. Through a modification you can change the look of the "Summi", as it was called.

The S51 from Simson was available in different equipment variants

  • In the basic equipment the motorcycle was called "N" for "normal equipment". The S51 B had indicators, a horn and a battery integrated as standard, the "C" was the comfort moped with full equipment. This offered the equipment of the "B" version, in addition there was a rev counter with high beam indicator light, a side stand and painted fenders.
  • The version "E", Enduro, offered a further option. The special features were the high handlebars and the raised exhaust with a standard heat protection. You can convert an S51 with other equipment by integrating an enduro exhaust. The change requires a little technical understanding, but you can do it yourself.

The conversion of the exhaust is not difficult

You can use a Simson S 51 of any equipment variant to convert the exhaust. The rear exhaust pipe is the same as on a S51 with other equipment. All you have to do is replace the manifold. You can buy this new or used. You will also need a new right side cover as the Exhaust is guided along this. This is only attached with a slotted screw. If you turn it out, you can remove the cover.

  1. Loosen the manifold from the cylinder block, use water pump pliers or a hook wrench for the manifold union nut.
  2. Repair instructions for the S51 - this is how you change the brakes

  3. Loosen the connection between the manifold and the center silencer. Then you can pull out the elbow because it is only plugged in.
  4. Unscrew the exhaust from the rear bracket, then remove the bracket as well. You no longer need this, because the exhaust is led along further up.
  5. Now the enduro exhaust is attached. Screw the enduro exhaust bracket to the upper mounting of the right shock absorber.
  6. Screw the exhaust onto the exhaust bracket that you just attached.
  7. Then insert the new exhaust manifold into the front part of the exhaust.
  8. Screw the manifold to the cylinder block with the union screw.
  9. Check the exact fit of the exhaust pipe on the manifold.
  10. Now you can screw the exhaust to the manifold tightly.

Make sure that the exhaust has heat protection. Without this, the passenger can burn their right leg, because the exhaust becomes quite hot while driving. If you take over an exhaust from an Enduro, the heat protection is usually already installed. Screw on the heat shield last.
