Temperature: the person and his body temperature

Body temperature means the temperature inside the body. The most common measurement method in humans is the use of a clinical thermometer. But what do the displayed values say?

Body temperature - which values are normal

Humans are living beings of the same temperature. This does not mean that all persons always have to be exactly the same warm, but that their organism constantly strives to keep its temperature constant.

  • The normal human body temperature is around 35.8 to 37.2 degrees Celsius. To determine the value, a clinical thermometer is either placed under the tongue or put the armpits; alternatively, measurements are taken rectally in the anus. This method may be the most uncomfortable for you, but it delivers the most authentic measurement results because the values measured there come closest to those of the inside of the body.
  • It is normal for the thermometer to read less in the morning than it does in the afternoon. If you are with fever in the bed lie and your value has risen towards evening, this does not necessarily mean that your condition has deteriorated.
  • You may also have noticed that you regularly start to shiver after midnight. This is not because it is colder at night than during the day, nor because the duvet has slipped. Again, the reason is a biorhythmic adjustment of the body temperature. From around 2 a.m., it has reached its lowest point of around 36.2 degrees. Towards morning it rises again to the base value - called the basal temperature.
  • In addition to the time-of-day-dependent fluctuations, there is a temperature change in the female organism that is dependent on the cycle. If this value is determined daily and taken into account for the use of contraceptive measures, one speaks of the temperature method.
  • Normal temperature in humans - information

The normal temperature in humans depends on where the measurement is made. There are also ...

Even if humans belong to the same group of living beings, fluctuations within a day or a month are completely normal.

What the human organism can handle

Even if the body of an equally warm living being always tries to keep the temperature as constant as possible, illness or external circumstances can still lead to life-threatening changes.

  • At a human body temperature of 40 degrees, medicine speaks of a very high fever. At 42 degrees Celsius, there is a risk of death from circulatory failure and from 42.6 degrees Celsius, the body's own proteins and enzymes are transformed in a manner that is definitely fatal.
  • If the mercury drops drastically, however, 35 degrees mean low temperature and 33 degrees indicate hypothermia. Certain death threatens from 27 degrees Celsius.
