Cans allowed at wedding?
Surely you've seen a newly married couple's car with empty cans adorned and rattled loudly through the streets, so that everyone could share in her young happiness permit. Maybe you are planning this fun for your own wedding too. But is this custom even legally permitted?
Rattling cans are a typical wedding custom
- Customs and traditions at the wedding are there many. One of them is that a chain with threaded, empty tin cans is tied to the back of the bride and groom's car. The newly married couple then drives home after the wedding or moves to the location where the subsequent celebration takes place they follow the chain on the journey and there is a loud and tinny clang in all the streets through which they make their way leads.
- On the one hand, this noise simply serves to let everyone else know that you are newly married and thus to share your own joy. On the other hand, it is said that the noise is supposed to drive away evil spirits who could stand in the way of marital happiness.
Is this custom allowed?
- Remember that the cans can also pose a risk to you and the rest of the road users. It can happen, for example, that they do not clatter evenly behind the car as intended, but instead get caught unhappily or get into the tires of the car. As a result, of course, the rope on which they were strung can easily tear and the rattling appendages end up on the roadway, where they obstruct the rest of the road traffic.
- For this reason, rattling cans are actually not allowed in normal traffic. According to ยง 30 para. 1 No. 1 of the StVZO (Road Traffic Regulations), a vehicle must be designed in such a way that other road users are not hindered or endangered as a result - which is sometimes not guaranteed by the cans as described is.
- However, should you be caught by the police on your wedding trip, they will usually be happy to turn a blind eye, though this custom is actually not allowed - usually one only marries once in a lifetime and as long as the path that has not been covered is disproportionately long or your cans are negligently badly attached, the law enforcement officers will take the trip most likely condone.
- In order not to let the fun spoil, you should definitely have another at a reasonable distance from your wedding party The driver belonging to the car will follow, who will supervise the attached cans and, if necessary, will notify you immediately by mobile phone if there are any problems. Don't overdo it with the length of your chain, the longer the longer the greater the risk. It is also best to reduce your driving speed so that the attached cans do not fly around too violently and rattle.
