The Thames which is on English Thames is called, rises in the Cotswold Hills northwest of London and about 150 kilometers from the English capital. From there, the river, on the whole, becomes continuously wider until it finally flows into the North Sea.

  • For example, the river near Oxford is only around 40 meters wide, but from there it can already be navigated with smaller boats.
  • In the capital itself, however, the Thames is much more impressive to look at, where it already reaches a width of 245 meters at the height of London Bridge. For comparison: The Rhine in Düsseldorf is around 400 meters wide.
  • But that's not all. The closer the river approaches the North Sea, the wider it now becomes, until it is finally 9 kilometers. If you look at a satellite image, you can recognize the mouth of the Thames into the sea by the characteristic funnel shape.

When in London get the best picture of the river by taking in the many famous bridges. The best known is Tower Bridge, which has been around since 1894. The London Bridge has a longer tradition, of which the ancient Romans already had a predecessor. In its current form, however, it has only existed since 1967, when the "modern bridge" was built. You can enjoy a special sight outside the capital, namely at Woolwich, where the so-called Thames Barrier is located. This barrier protects the city from flash floods.
