As well as or so how?
The German spelling can be tricky: You have to write a word that sounds the same once together and once separately! One of these traps is the word "as well", which is written separately in another context.
In these cases write "as well as"
The spelling "as well as" exists as well as "such as" or "so, wie" - the spellings have very different meanings or are in different syntactic Functions used.
- The word "as well as" as a conjunction is always written together. A conjunction connects two words or parts of sentences or two sentences with each other.
- "As well" can stand between individual words and then means "and" or "and also". For example, it says: "He played the piano, violin and clarinet." This is a co-ordinating conjunction. It can be used to avoid the repetition of the word "and".
- "As well as" can also subordinate a subordinate clause to a main clause. The word then has the meaning of "as soon as". This is the case, for example, in the following sentence: "I'll be there as soon as I've finished here." The subordinate clause is of course separated from the main clause with a comma.
Here you write separately
In the case of comparisons, "as like" is written separately.
Coordinating conjunctions
If you studied parts of speech in school, conjunctions ...
- When making a comparison without a subordinate clause, do not write a comma between "so" and "how". So it says: "He did it like him", "She spoke like always" or "He acted like an animal."
- If, on the other hand, there is a subordinate clause, write "such as" not only separately, but also with a comma. "He did it like he did." "She spoke as she had learned to." "He acted as an animal would have acted." Also in sentences like: "It happened as I had hoped" or "The way you look, I will not take you with me" are constructions of subordinate clauses before.
